Meet Meemers

Big on personality. Short on spine.

Meet Meemers: a little black cat from Central Illinois with spectacular white whiskers, surprisingly long legs, and absolutely no shortage of opinions.

Meemers sitting on a garden path, looking back with bright green eyes and long white whiskers.

You may know her as Short Spine Meemers. She came home as Mila, but somewhere along the way, “Meemers” stuck. Since that’s the name she answers to now, we’re pretty sure she considers the matter settled.

Her story began with a much harder chapter. Someone left her outside an animal shelter in an open box on a hot summer afternoon. She had a badly infected wound on her back, and nobody yet understood why her body looked so different or what her future might hold.

Katie, who worked at the shelter, reached into her kennel. Meemers head-bumped her hand.

That was the beginning.

Where some people might have seen a strange-looking little cat, Katie saw someone to love. She wanted Meemers to have a chance at a good life. That connection became a family, and Meemers found her home.

Meemers has Short Spine Syndrome, which gives her that unmistakable compact shape. At home, she gets a little extra help: daily brushing, raised food bowls, and care suited to her needs. She shares her world with an assortment of animal siblings and approaches life in her own distinctly Meemers way.

She’s chatty. Curious. Stubborn. Her meow has been compared to Gary from SpongeBob, and she rarely leaves anyone guessing how she feels.

Sharing her online began simply because her family loved capturing those little moments. Then one video took off, and people around the world started falling for the cat they already adored.

Meemers, naturally, remains entirely unimpressed by internet fame.

She’s busy being herself and reminding people how much there is to love when you give someone a chance.
